In late 2024, I started a tree service out of my house in South Charlotte. Since then it has grown to a full crew where we operate advanced machinery like spider lift, chipper, skid steer, etc. We also have a growing tree health care business. This crew mostly operates in the South Charlotte wedge. What I found is the most affluent areas have the most trees AND highest demand for tree care. A question I often get is “how do you find good workers?”. Well the answer is they are out there, but they live all over. Currently most our guys live outside Mecklenburg County and drive in for work as the pay is better. So it just made sense to start a 2nd crew with its own unique name to operate in North Mecklenburg County. So North County Tree Care was born.
Long term, we do not know where this new brand will go. One idea is if we get a good operations manager, we could sell this brand and crew off to him. The one thing I know for sure is I am opposed to private equity sales. I feel all they do is strip all the value out of a small business and customers can feel it. I will either retain ownership long term or sell to someone local one day. But I feel obligation to help out ordinary folks which does not mean chasing every last dollar. There is a way for a small business to be reasonably profitable without selling out or paying your workers super low wages.
My favorite part of running a tree health care operation is connection with local people. Although I majored in Forestry in college, that was 25 years ago. Since I’ve work for some large global organization where I’ve been just a number. We are all people. Children of God. Getting to know people face to face in person, whether it be staff or customers is my favorite part of this work. I feel this is especially true as my wife and I raise our kids in the iPhone/iPad age.
